the post about Marlborough and my being a former member reminded me that I owe my subs – can I pay electronically?
Henry ChurchMemberWow – that was phenomenally hard! Very hot and very humid with no wind. Thunder, lightning and rain were all around but didn’t catch up with me until 70km in.
That said I completed the course in 13hrs and 2 mins and finished in 94th place (out of 536) – both within 150% of the winner (9hrs and 4 mins) and in the top 25% (my two measures) so a pleasing result.
For the record Rob Forbes, a simply amazing athlete, came 2nd just 2 minutes behind the winner whilst Richard Hurdle dropped at 48km.
I’m off to put my feet up – no blisters but my legs are stiff!

Henry ChurchMemberi’m no expert but
* I’d look at other brands too (running ultras I need a longer battery life than my Garmin 410 has)
* would opt for one with navigation
* would look to spend as much as i could afford. I think that you tend to get what you pay forH
Henry ChurchMemberEvidently not as I was the one RSE entry at this well organised event!
My 2nd time and this year it was hard work, it being very windy and very slippery under foot. The stretches of ankle deep mud (particularly over the first 5 miles) and howling headwind for miles 5 to 12 (whilst on top of the Downs) sapped energy like you wouldn’t believe
I got round in 5hrs 40 – 20mins slower than last time – but that reflects (I hope) the conditions and my lack of training (due to niggling but persistent injuries). The fact that I was 33rd out c150 starters means that I wasn’t the only one who found it hard work – but does suggest that an average of 20miles per week over the last 8 weeks with my long run topping out at 11.5 miles isn’t enough!
As soon as I stop hobbling around I’ll be back

Henry ChurchMemberrecovering well, thanks – but disappointed that I have dropped 2 places since I finished. 2 ghost runners snuck ahead!
Henry ChurchMemberC2C conpleted
Weather was sunny, a little cold when I started but otherwise perfect. Trail was wet and muddy in places but better than I expected.
I significantly surprised myself by coming 55th out of over 300 runners (16th V40) in 6hrs 52mins – 9.48m/m over 42miles. Still absolutely staggered that the winner was over 2 (yes two) hours quicker than me – yes, he averaged 6mins 51secs per mile for every single one of the 42miles!!
Thanks to
- Brent Mullane who I met at about 5 miles and who, knowing the route, navigated me through the next 10miles or so
- Mike Ward – a friend of mine who put me up the night before and crewed for me, and
- Go Beyond for a very well organised race
Lesson learned – if you mess about with your insoles then remember to put the originals back in. I didn’t and completed the last 17miles in my road shoes (down the Grand Union canal towpath) with no insoles. D’oh
I won’t be at training tomorrow – I’ll be practising walking properly
See you soon
Henry ChurchMemberthanks to all who have responded
