RSE Club Report – Running for Pudding!

Bromham 10k Pudding Run

Held in the Wiltshire town of Bromham, this 10k is run is a flat, road course – perfect for a PB! As well as a medal prize, runners also receive a Christmas pudding to take home. This is a great run for some festive spirit, particularly from RSE club members who love a chance to dress up!

This is the 3rd time I’ve raced the ‘Pudding Run’ it’s always really well supported, very friendly with great marshals. It’s a nice flat two lap course which is great for a PB attempt and you get rewarded with a nice medal and a Christmas pudding.

A Message from Caroline Terry, Club Welfare Officer:

Firstly, thank you to club members who are wearing hi-visual running gear including body or head torches on club nights. (any time you run in the dark!)

Please can I remind you that light coloured tops and jackets are not so good at reflecting light. So please get yourself kitted out with something that helps you see where you are going and others can see you. (the pavements & roads are not so smooth… )

It is so important to run safely. It also sends a message to the general public and upholds our good reputation of being respectful to others who use the pavements and roads. (see RSE constitution).

Thank you and keep safe.

If you would like a run or race included in the club report, don’t forget to message Ellie Taylor by 5pm Sunday each week 🙂

RSE Club Report – Quiet Villages and Picturesque Forests!

AVR Wiltshire Half Marathon

This small, friendly race is popular amongst RSE runners for the fantastic support by locals and, most importantly, cakes at the end. The race takes place on country lanes around Edington, Steeple Ashton and Great Hinton, and is tipped as undulating (although some may argue that the incline at Mile 9 qualifies it for hilly!). This year, the race was included in the RSE club championship, attracting a brilliant number of club members!

Last half marathon of the year and managed a new PB! 🤩 despite being undulating (aka very hilly!!) A lovely scenic course in unexpected sunshine plus great support from Team RSE 😎 Official chip time – 1.55.09 😆

Elliot Gardiner

My first club race of the year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fantastic to be running surrounded by the team colours. Well organised event, friendly marshalls and pretty route too.

Nadine Brown

I really loved today, it was definitely a challenging course with those pesky hills and in particular mile 8s never ending one! But a beautiful route and I’m chuffed with an over 5 min PB from it!!

Rosie Oates
  • Mark Garrett – 1:28:37
  • Paul Robertson – 1:39:45
  • Rosie Oates – 1:40:52 – A 5 minute PB! 🥳
  • Sharon Smith – 1:43:36 – 2nd in age category! 🥳
  • Elaine Chapman – 1:49:53
  • Jo Wood – 1:50:29
  • Elliot Gardiner – 1:55:09 – A new PB! 🥳
  • Nadine Brown – 1:55:28
  • Ellie Taylor – 1:55:28
  • Liz Farooq – 2:00:26
  • Vicki Mason – 2:03:33 – A new PB! 🥳
  • Cheri Edwards – 2:03:33
  • Jo Beames – 2:10:20
  • Linda Edwards – 2:11:49
  • Caroline Joynes-Creed – 2:23:08 – An 8 minute PB! 🥳
  • Kevin Joynes-Creed – 2:23:10

Congratulations to everyone running, and an extra well done to all those that got PBs on a difficult course!

Forest of Dean Runner 10k

Taking place in the heart of the Forest of Dean, this undulating 10k race offers the chance for runners to take in the beautiful surroundings and maybe catch a glimpse of the wildlife in the forest. Runners are treated to a picturesque finish by the lake.

Running for RSE was Anne Gardiner, who completed the course in a brilliant time of 57:37!

It was really cold but I loved it!

Anne Gardiner

Eynsham 10k

This 2 lap 10k race takes place around the village of Eynsham, Oxfordshire and is part of the Oxfordshire Race Series. The course is tipped as fast and flat, making it a popular one amongst runners.

Liz Hulcup ran for RSE, completing the course in a fantastic time of 50:27 and coming 2nd in the LV65 category! 🥳

It’s a flat, good PB course, but a very slight incline by the A40 and if it’s windy you are running head on into it, but fairly calm this morning. It’s usually a sell out as it’s part of the Oxon County Championship race series.

Liz Hulcup

Red Buzzard 20k Trail Race

Hosted by Malvern Buzzards Running Club, the Red Buzzard 20k takes on the beautiful countryside around Herefordshire and Worcestershire, following public trails and bridleways.

Carol and Andy Sworn took to the course with friends!

  • Carol Sworn – 2:26:42
  • Andy Sworn – 2:26:47

Well organised, very friendly marshals and a fabulous route made it a very enjoyable day out. Will definitely be in our 2022 race diary.

RSE Club Report – A ‘Chilly’ Time of Year to Run!

Chilly 10k

The Chilly 10k lives up to it’s name – with races held in February and November, the day is, without fail, cold and windy. The Castle Coombe race track is open to the elements, meaning that runners this Sunday took on the blowy weather, for an additional bit of resistance training. (At least it wasn’t torrential rain like April 2020!). That being said, the course is fast and flat, perfect for a PB and a favourite amongst RSE runners.

  • Mark Garrett – 39:22 – 1st in age category!
  • Nia Glover – 41:50 – 2nd in age category! And a new PB!
  • Paul Robertson – 42:34
  • Rosie Oates – 43:59
  • Elaine Chapman – 47:27
  • Fran Penny – 48:56
  • Cheri Edwards – 49:03
  • Sarah Reynolds – 49:05
  • Ellie Taylor – 49:20
  • Darren Jenner – 50:00
  • Alan Powderhill – 50:17 – New PB!
  • Sarah Page – 51:39 – 2nd in age category!
  • Linda Edwards – 55:44
  • Felicity Crotty – 59:10
  • Pauline Tilbury – 1:01:09

RSE Club Report – Ultra Slogs!

Testway Ultra

This picturesque 40 mile ultra takes place in the heart of Hampshire across the meandering countryside. Running for RSE was Emma Thomas, who completed her first ultra with seasoned ultra runner, Nadine Brown!

Starting in the stunning Linkenholt estate in north Hampshire finishing in Totton in the south and giving you everything Hampshire has to offer from its lovely chalky hills to its picturesque villages in the south.

It was a fantastic route, really well signed – even in the dark; as our headtorches had to come out for the last 5 miles! Emma and I ran together and bearing in mind it was her first ultra she was incredible – we were very pleased to come under our 10hour target too.

Nadine Brown

Emma and Nadine finished in a brilliant time of 9 hours 43 mins! Incredible running from both of you!

Sodbury Slog

The race website quotes this run as ‘not for the faint-hearted’ – think trail, think hilly, think mud! Taking place in South Gloucestershire, the route includes water features and obstacles on private country land, to test the resilience of runners.

Zoe Markham-Lee took on the challenge, finishing in a great time of 2.12.10!

Just shy of 10 miles. Through sheep dips, pig troughs and loads of mud and poop. A hard trail run!

Zoe Markham-Lee

As the race website writes, ‘don’t swallow the water. It’s not all water’…

Well done, Zoe! We hope you managed to get clean before the car ride home…

The Druids Challenge

This scenic challenge takes place across 3 days, covering 136km of the Ridgeway (85 miles). The route boasts 2203m of ascent as well as prehistoric sites, valleys and stunning views.

No stranger to a Ridgeway ultra run but his first time completing the Druids challenge was Mark Manley, who took to the hills for the full 3-day course. He was joined by Lesley Hinsley for Day 3, which covered 47.7k of the route – her first ultra run!

It was truly amazing 29+miles. My first ultra. I’m hooked now and can’t wait for the next one. Beautiful scenery, perfect weather. Much easier than a marathon I might add. Mark is truly amazing, considering it was day 3 for him, he just kept going. Got the bug now!

Lesley Hinsley

Mark finished in a total time of 16hours 50min, 8th in his age category!

And Lesley completed Day 3 in a brilliant 5:45:13!
