RSE Sports Day – You’re never too old to be young!

RSE Sports Day!

In amongst the training for first 10ks, marathons, ultras and for some crazy few, ultimate triathlons, it’s always best to include some fun! It was with great excitement that RSE hosted our second ever sports day – a chance to get competitive, while dressed as a scarecrow!

A huge thank you to Nadine Brown for organising the event, and her assistants, Pauline Tilbury, Laura Butler and Dave Witnall.

The evening included sports day classics, including egg and spoon and three-legged races, as well as long jumps and (foam) javelin throwing. There was also some very competitive short sprints, and some incredibly small space hoppers!

Take a look at some of the highlights below!

RSE Club Report – It’s so hot in the shade, I decided to stay in the sun!

Salisbury Plain Marathon

Most people try to stay shaded on the hottest days of the year, other people run marathons in the blistering heat across a plain, where there’s absolutely no shade. RSE’s David Witnall is the latter, running the Salisbury Plain marathon, a trail run across the largest military training area in the UK. The route is a 1-lap circuit starting and finishing at the Old Fowler Barracks, following footpaths and byways.

Well done to Dave, who finished the course in 5:05:09!

On the hottest day of the year, it was never going to be easy or fun. The aim was to not get carried away and race it, but to spend some time on the feet ahead of Hope 24hr trail festival. Well it turned out to be fun, despite the heat, with stunning views, friendly marshals and checkpoints, and well marked routes. I may be back for the winter edition...

Cirencester Summer Sizzler

The clue is in the title for this hot and humid race, held in Cirencester Bathurst Estate. Hosted by fellow Cirencester AC, the course starts by the Old Kennels, before heading out on a 2-lap course featuring a tough stint up Ewe Pens. As part of the Glos. AAA road championship and RSE’s very own championship, the race was a sellout and over 40 RSE club members took on the challenge – that’s nearly 10% of all the runners that took part!

A race I always find tough, with that lovely steady gradient! I had a great run, achieving a course PB by a minute over last years time. Brilliant racing against other club members too, and an amazing turn out from RSE.

RSE Club Report – Running for Beer!

Stroud Beer Race

This tough race is one to test the hill endurance on – based at the Old Lodge, Minchinhampton, the 3-lap course takes runners down to Amberley Inn before the course starts climbing, up to Beaudesert School and across the common. Included in both the RSE club championship and the Glos. AAA road series, the race is all worth it for a free half-pint of beer at the end!

It was great to see so many club members running the course, as well as those out cheerleading!

Definitely one of the hardest races I’ve done. Hills, hills and more hills! So chuffed to achieve a sub 1 hour time. Brilliant support from RSE as always and great club experience again.

Undulating with a capital "U"! I last ran this race in 2021 and this year the conditions were a lot cooler thankfully, but a nasty headwind coming up the long incline at the end of each lap made it particularly challenging. The support of the RSE crowd cheering us on as we finished each lap was really appreciated and spurred me on.
Nia Glover
This a 'Why did I enter?' kinda race but this time I enjoyed it. I managed a 9 min course PB which I'm super happy with. Lovely to see so many of club out.

Virtual Efforts Session W/C 29th May 2023

Wednesday 31st May will see RSE travelling to Minchinhapton for the latest club championship race, The Stroud Beer Race, therefore we will not be holding our normal Wednesday efforts session.

So you don’t miss out on the training please find below the session you would be doing on the night.

Those of you who were members during the Covid Lockdown may remember this session set by Nadine which is designed to help build both your speed and endurance. At the time Nadine described this session as a ‘Speedurance Sandwich’

Session plan:

  • Take an easy jog of 8 to 10 mins to a suitable location.
  • Complete a few warm up & activation exercises such as squats, lunges, high knees, butt kicks and a few short sharp strides.
  • Part one of your sandwich is based on speed:
    • Run 5x 2min intervals at a hard pace (8/9 out of 10 effort, faster than 5k pace) with 1min walking recoveries.
  • Part two of your sandwich will then help to build endurance:
    • Run 1x 10min interval at a consistent but challenging tempo pace (7/8 out of 10 effort, somewhere between 5k & 10k pace).
  • Part three of the sandwich is a repeat of part one:
    • Run 5x 2min intervals at a hard pace (8/9 out of 10 effort, faster than 5k pace) with 1min walking recoveries.
  • Take up to 2 mins recovery between each layer of the sandwich to ensure you are fresh enough to tackle each section.
  • At the end of the third layer take a steady jog of 8 to 10 mins to cool down before stretching off.

Those who are not coming along to support at the race can use the normal hour on Wednesday or you can complete the session at a time that suits you throughout the week…
