RSE Club Report – A Little Bit Undulating!

Flying Monk 10k

The unusual name for this Malmesbury 10k race comes from the Eilmer of Malmesbury, a monk best known for his early attempt at a gliding flight using wings!

The race itself is undulating, crossing 1.5k of the Fosse Way, the oldest Roman road in the country. The race is well supported, with pacers to help lead the way around the quiet country lanes. The Flying Monk 10k was the next race in RSE’s club championship!

  • David Witnall – 40:28
  • Mark Garrett – 43:24 – 3rd MV50
  • Nia Glover – 44:00 – 1st FSen
  • Elaine Chapman – 52:51
  • Darren Jenner – 53:24
  • Kirsty Pitts – 57:53
  • Anne-Marie Davies – 1:00:58
  • Felicity Crotty – 1:05:34

Brilliant times from team RSE!

Cotswold Classic

Hosted by Witney Road Runners, this 10 mile race takes runners on a tour around Witney and its surrounding villages. The race website describes the course as ‘fundulating’ (a unique take on hilly 😂) and shows of the picturesque beauty of the area.

  • Jo Wood – 1:32:48
  • Sylvia Warman – 2:05:48

The hills were quite challenging but it’s the longest distance I’ve done so far so I’m very happy to complete it and slightly faster than I thought I would.

Sylvia Warman

Well done both of you! Great times!

Hillingdon 20 Mile

Formerly known as the Finchley 20 mile, this race is the longest-running 20 miler in the UK! The race starts at Hillingdon Athletic Club and follows a 4-lap, undulating course around Ruislip.

Running for RSE was Liz Hulcup, who ran a fantastic time of 3.31.11.

Horrible undulating course, but lots of friendly marshalls. It was run mainly on footpaths with some not in the best condition!

Liz Hulcup

Fantastic running, Liz!

Cheltenham Half Marathon

Starting and finishing at Cheltenham race course, this half marathon follows a town centre course, meaning it is well supported with spectators. Although the race website claims the course is ‘mostly flat’, runners were treated to a few tough hills. RSE were out in force for the run!

  • Elliot Gardiner – 1:49:57 – New PB!
  • Phil Newman – 1:54:13
  • Kevin Joynes-Creed – 2:00:24
  • Tim Wainwright – 2:00:24
  • Katy Miller – 2:10:13
  • Zoe Markham-Lee – 2:11:47

Route around Cheltenham town starting and finishing at the racecourse – you don’t realise how hilly Cheltenham is until you are running it! Aimed for 8.20 min pacing which I managed to stick to exactly, resulting in a new PB! 💪🏻 The last part of the race around the racecourse was never ending!

Cotswold Sprint Triathlon

This new triathlon takes place at the Cotswold Water Park’s Lake 32, and Cotswold Country Park and Beach. Entrants can enter the full series throughout the year, or challenge themselves for one event. The course features a 750m swim in the lake, a fast and flat bike ride, and a 2-lap run around the lake.

Taking part in the triathlon was RSE’s Martin ‘Ted’ Pitts!

A great event and it went much as expected Swim 750m (1st in age group) out the water in 13.13. Bike 20k 33.59 and Run 5k (which was actually 5.5k) 30.29 total time 1hr 20.29. It was my only Tri this year so I was pleased with the result especially on the swim and bike (not so much the run! 😁)

Ted Pitts

Brilliant work, Ted!

RSE Club Report – Running the Bridge!

Severn Bridge 10k

This out and back race begins in Chepstow before taking runners across the Severn and Wye bridges. Although the race website suggests the course is not hilly, runners can expect long, slow inclines on the bridge!

[It was] quite hot and a stinger of a hill near the end.

Felicity Crotty

Running for RSE was Felicity Crotty, Darren Jenner and Jessica James, who put in some brilliant times, despite the heat of the bank holiday!

  • Darren Jenner – 52:08
  • Jessica James – 56:39
  • Felicity Crotty – 1:03:38

Well done everyone!

RSE Club Report – It’s all About a Fast 5k!

Gloucester 5k

This fast 5k was the next race in the Gloucestershire AAA County Championships and a great opportunity to set a new PB. Although the course is undulating, the downhill start helps set a good running rhythm. The race started and finished at the Beacon Hotel, Haresfield, and runners were treated to a free drink at the end. The pub also held a BBQ – perfect to end a summer’s evening run.

  • Nia Glover – 20:37 – 1st SL!

RSE Club Report – From Solihull to Cork!

Solihull Half Marathon

This undulating half marathon starts and finishes in the heart of Solihull, crossing through Malvern park and the centre of the village Knowle on route. Thousands of runners enter the race each year, and crowds flock to the town in support, meaning there’s a fantastic atmosphere for runners.

Running from RSE was Liz Farooq and Liz Hulcup, who finished in brilliant times, despite the summer heat!

  • Liz Hulcup – 2.09.54
  • Liz Farooq – 2.12.55

It was organised by runthrough.co.uk and they did a really good job. Great atmosphere with an event village, bands, food stalls and some pacers. The sun and the hills got the better of me so I didn’t run as well as I had hoped. The kids with the super soakers dotted around the course were magnificent.

Liz Farooq

Brilliant work by both Liz’s!

Cork Iron Man

For those who are unsure of what an ‘ironman’ consists of, think of a tough triathlon and times it by 10! The Cork Iron Man is no different, with over 225km to cross by bike, foot and swimming. This incredible challenge takes in the natural beauty and historic character of Cork. The swim starts at  Claycastle beach in Youghal, followed by a coastal cycle through fishing villages, and then ending on a fast and flat road marathon.

Currently nearing the end of the triathlon is RSE’s Andy Sworn!

As I write this [Andy] has completed the sea swim (3.8km), bike (180km) and has just started the run…..only a marathon to go! He’s going really well, although he didn’t really have a target he’s well on course for a great time, likely getting to the finish line around 8pm. Although not quite as steamy as Ciren, its very hot here….not something he anticipated in Ireland! Massive thanks to Sarah Reynolds & Matt Hooper who have travelled out here especially to support him.

Carol Sworn

Well done, Andy! We look forward to hearing about it when you cross the finish line!
