RSE Club Report – A Marathon and 3 Halves!

London Landmarks Half Marathon

If you fancy a tour of London, the Landmarks Half Marathon is highly recommended, taking in some of the most iconic sites across the city. Runners are treated to views of St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, Big Ben, The London Eye as well as the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Notorious for it’s incredible atmostphere, the race is organised by baby charity, Tommy’s and raises a lot of money for good causes.

Congratulations to Paul Robertson who finished the course in 1:48:07!

It was amazing. Its my favourite race of the year. A little slower for me than last year but that just meant more time to savour the encouragement of all the charities and the street bands and performers. It’s just so much fun.

Paul Robertson

Manchester Marathon

A go-to for club members, the Manchester Marathon boasts a fast and flat route supported by lively and friendly crowds that make for an excellent race atmosphere. The 26.2 mile race begins at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket ground before taking runners through the city centre, past Sale and Timperley and then out towards Altrincham. Challengers then make the long run back to the start.

The Manchester Marathon is the 4th largest marathon in Europe and the UK’s flattest!

Running for RSE was Jon Collins, who ran with his niece to finish in a brilliant time of 4:54:50! Well done to Jon and his niece!

Rutland Spring Half Marathon

The Rutland Spring Half Marathon is scenic race that takes place along Rutland water and around Hambleton Peninsula. Starting and finishing at Barnsdale Wood, the course is a mix of undulating tarmac and trail, boasting unrivalled views of the countryside.

Running for RSE were Darren Jenner and Felicity Crotty!

  • Darren Jenner – 1:50:16 – A 2.5 minute PB!
  • Felicity Crotty – 2:23:49

Well done both of you!

Taunton Half Marathon

This country half marathon is popular amongst runners in Somerset, taking entrants on a 1 lap rural route, starting and finishing at the Somerset College of Arts and Technology. 600 half marathon runners took on the challenge whilst marathon runners also took on 2 laps of the course.

Well done to Zoe Markham-Lee who completed the half marathon course in 2.08.57!

Was lush – Sunny Somerset today and medal given by the mayor.

Zoe Markham-Lee

Excellent running, Zoe!

Gloucestershire AAA Awards

This week saw the prize giving for the Gloucestershire AAA Awards, and 2 incredible runners from RSE received an award. Well done to Sharon Smith and Nia Glover who picked up prizes in the LV70 and Ladies Open categories respectively!

Sharon was there to receive her award, a fantastic looking shield!

Coaching Plans for 2022…

We are pleased to announce your club coaches have been working hard behind the scenes to help improve the coaching offer we give you as Running Somewhere Else members.

Over the coming months we will be delivering your Wednesday night efforts sessions not as individual sessions but as part of a bigger picture which is designed to help you all improve as runners.

In fact we’ve already been doing it since Christmas…

Below you will find the coaching calendar we are working to highlighting the various training blocks within the first 6 months of the year.

  • Jan 3rd > 23rd – 3 Week New Year Kick Starter
    • A short sharp program of efforts to burn off the Christmas excess and start 2022 in style.
  • Jan 24th > Feb 27th – 4 Week Drill Introduction & Development
    • Introduction to the importance and benefits of running drills.
    • Development of ability to complete drills.
  • Feb 28th > April 24th – 8 Week Speed Endurance
    • 8 weeks of targeted efforts sessions designed to give runners the ability to run faster for longer.
    • These sessions will help runners improve thier times over any distance from 5k to Marathon and will be of particular benefit to those looking for a good time at the Stratford 1/2 Marathon.
  • April 25th > June 19th – 8 Weeks Running Stronger
    • This 8 week training block will focus on making you a stronger and more injury resistant runner.
  • June 20th > July 17th – 4 Weeks of Fun with Form
    • During the summer months efforts can be exactly that, an effort.
    • This 4 week block provides an opportunity to have some fun, look at our running form and take the chance to enjoy ourselves on what we hope will be some sunny, warm summer evenings.

We want to assure you that the plans we have in place are as inclussive as they always have been (so much so I doubt anyone really noticed we have changed things) but we are now all working towards a targeted goal.

For those of you competing in the club championship races these sessions will act as a great spring board towards improved performances and for those who aren’t we will still help you improve and maintain your running fitness just the same as we always have…

In addition to this later in the year we will be looking at providing individual training plans to work alongside the club structure for members who are targeting specific events. More on this to follow so watch this space.

If you have any questions about what we are doing feel free to speak to either Carol, Dave or Kevin.

RSE Club Report – Chester, Chippenham and Cross Country!

Chippenham Spring 10 Mile

Starting and finishing in Monkton Park, Chippenham, the race follows quiet country roads around the village. The course is listed as ‘predominantly flat’, although our RSE runners didn’t quite agree with that statement!

Congratulations to Elliot Gardiner, Zoe Markham-Lee and Mark Garrett for completing the course!

  • Elliot Gardiner – 1:17:45 – A New PB!
  • Mark Garrett – 1:17:56
  • Zoe Markham-Lee – 1:35:27 – A New PB

A new DB max race route and a new 10 mile race PB πŸ€©πŸ… Not quite β€˜pan flat’ as advertised, especially the bridge over the railway at about mile 8! πŸ₯΅ So I was very pleased to get another PB at this distance. Thanks to Mark Garrett for pushing me along in mile 9 πŸ‘πŸ»

Elliot Gardiner

As Elliott said on Strava, it wasn’t as flat as we thought!

Zoe Markham-Lee

Chester 10k

Tipped as a fast course, the Chester 10k passes some iconic sights, including Chester racecourse, the historic Victorian town hall, Medieval Cathedral and Eastgate Clock. The flat, wide roads make this a perfect event for runners chasing a time.

Well done to Felicity Crotty, who ran the course alongside her cousin, and earnt a very awesome looking medal!

Felicity finished in a brilliant time of 1:01:39!

Gloucestershire AAA Cross Country

After last weekends final Gloucestershire Cross country meeting at Old Down, the race series results have been collated and we can announce that Paul Beaumont has jointly won the V70 Championship!

This years Cross country series has been, as expected, run in some tough conditions. The mud of Cirencester park in November, the wind at Pittville park in February and the hills of Old Down last weekend. Well done Paul for representing the club (sometimes solo) and winning in your age category. Let’s hope for more club success in the next series starting again in November.

David Witnall, Club Captain

Fantastic running, Paul! Well done!

First Aid Course

Well done to the RSE club members who completed and passed the first aid course this weekend. Lead by Phil from Cotswold First Aid, club members were taught the fundamentals of emergency first aid, plus a few running-orientated extras (think sprained ankles!).

It may have been fun and games to patch each other up on the day, but our club members are now prepared (if ever needed) during club sessions.

RSE Club Report – London Landmarks and Rainy Races!

London Winter Run

The Cancer Research UK London Winter Run took place on the 13th February in the centre of the capital city, following a route of famous London landmarks. The event boasts live entertainment, fancy dress characters and over 11,000 runners.

Running for RSE was Charlie Austin, who completed the course in a fantastic time of 1:16:05!

Really lovely route around Central London with the roads closed to traffic. Starts in Trafalgar Square and goes to the City and back again.

The beginner’s sessions at RSE have really helped me and although I didn’t manage to run it all, it wasn’t awful!

Charlie Austin

Wiltshire 10

The next race in the RSE Club Championship was the Wiltshire 10, starting and finishing in Melksham. Despite the windy and rainy weather, a fantastic number of RSE runners turned out for the event, which didn’t go unnoticed – as one rival club runner put it, ‘Have I just been overtaken by half of Cirencester?’ The course follows rural, undulating lanes to Lacock, before following the River Avon back to Melksham.

  • Mark Garrett – 1:05:17 – 3rd MV50!
  • Dave Witnall – 1:07:52
  • Nia Glover – 1:12:11
  • Phil Southworth – 1:16:40

  • Felicity Crotty – 1:43:41
  • Caroline Joynes-Creed – 1:45:15 – A 1 minute 20 sec PB!

Out & back route from Melksham. Managed to get a new 10 mile race PB despite the strong howling headwinds and torrential rain! 😁 I was a very pleased drowned rat at the finish line! Thanks again to Robbo for pacing and pushing me along πŸ’ͺ🏻

Elliot Gardiner

Incredible times from Team RSE!

Gloucestershire XC Country

Taking place in Pittville Park, Cheltenham on the 13th February was race 2 in the Gloucester AA cross country league. It was a 2 lap course around the park and edges of Pittville lake with 2 stream crosses to negotiate. With heavy rain to contend with, it was a tough challenge to take on!

A huge well done to Paul Beaumont who took part in the event! Official results are still to be released.
