RSE Club Report – Running for Beer, the Club and the Queen!

Stroud Beer Race

With the promise of a free beer at the end, running club members headed over to Stroud this week for an alternative workout to the Wednesday club sessions – a hot, very hilly race. The course starts at the Old Lodge on Minchinhampton Common, where runners navigated the cows to park and get warmed up. The route then followed 3 laps down into Amberley, with a very steep climb back towards the pub.

Included this year in the RSE club championship, it was great to see so many members of the club take part! As many had not competed in a 7.2 mile race before, its safe to assume most club members also achieved a PB!

Westonbirt Sprint Triathlon

Organised by DB Max, the event’s swim takes place within the grounds of the beautiful Westonbirt Girls School at the Westonbirt Leisure Centre. The 400m swim is in the heated indoor pool. The 24k bike section is a fast, flat course, which passes the world famous Westonbirt Arboretum and the Royal Residence of Highgrove. The final 5k run takes place through the school grounds.

A huge well done to RSE’s Andy Sampson, and Nadine Brown, who completed her first ever triathlon!

  • Andy Sampson – 1:22:57
  • Nadine Brown – 1:41:01

I’ve poor swimming technique and no confidence on a bike but completing a triathlon was on the bucket list.

It wasn’t fast and, 15 hours after Stroud Beer Race probably wasn’t clever but like Eden said to me upon finishing, “I don’t care where you came as long as you enjoyed it and had fun!” Wise words from the 6yr old!

Special thanks to Rob and kids for supporting and Sampo for talking me in to it!

Nadine Brown

God Bless The Queen 7 Hour Challenge

This Jubilee inspired event takes place across a 4.5 mile course which loops up and down the River Thames by the Magna Carta and Queens statue. Entrants are challenged to complete as many laps at they can within the 7 hour window. The race promised a lot of bunting and street party water stations.

Congratulations to RSE’s Mark Manley, who completed 40 miles within 6 hours and 50 minutes! Mark came 1st overall in the event, completing the furthest distance within the 7 hour period!

Fairford 10k

Topping off the long weekend’s racing celebrations was Running Somewhere Else’s very own race, the Fairford 10k. Club members marshalled and cheered, from those on bag drop and entries, to the water stations and timing station – a huge thank you to all those who supported in creating a fantastic event!

This year, the race was part of the Gloucester AAA race series, which meant that entries sold out quickly. The course itself runs from Fairford rugby club before following country lanes out to Quenington and back. The race coincides with the Fairford festival, with a kid’s race, food and bar on offer for a family day out.

  • Paul Beaumont – 47:32
  • Elaine Chapman – 49:02
  • Sarah Page – 52:35

300k May Challenge

A huge well done to Zoe Markham-Lee who completed a 300k May distance challenge!

It was hard! Basically 10k a day with one rest day. If you miss a day, the miles mount up… My legs are still solid!

Zoe Markham-Lee

For those of you who work better in miles, that’s 180 miles for the month! Brilliant work, Zoe – time for a well earnt rest!

RSE Club Report – Running the Royal Mile!

Edinburgh Half Marathon

This city centre half marathon starts with a stunning backdrop at Holyrood park, before heading down the historic royal mile and out east towards the coast. The race website claims that it is ‘the fastest half marathon route in the world’ with a 90m descent towards sea level. The race is filled with history and culture, as well as a festival vibe.

Club member, Amanda Ball, ran the course in RSE colours!

Today’s race goal was to take in the atmosphere and sights with my first running buddy from my old Warwickshire club. As I wasn’t chasing a PB, I also wanted to see how low I could keep my HR (heart rate) and I’m pleased with the outcome.

A nice, flat route which took us along the coast.

Amanda Ball

Incredible running, Amanda!

parkrun Cup!

Something is returning and it is called the 🥁🥁………….RSE Parkrun cup!

This is a competition that puts everyone at all abilities on an even playing field. It’s for all runners, from beginners to the experienced – any pace, any level. Everyone who enters will be drawn 1 on 1 against an opponent, but those with faster previous parkrun times will receive a handicap.

For example –

  • Coach Dave’s Cirencester parkrun PB is 19 mins
  • Ellie Taylor’s is 24 mins

If they were drawn against each other, Dave would need to beat Ellie’s time by more than 5 mins on the day to be able to progress to the next round.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Arrows-3-pointing-down-arrow-down-animated.gif

The competition will start on the 11th June with round 1 – that gives you only 1 more week to set your Cirencester parkrun time!

The final will be in September – you have until June to set your starting time!

For the rules/ guidelines for the competition, or if you would like to enter please message David Witnall.

If you would like a run or race included in the club report, don’t forget to message Ellie Taylor by 5pm Sunday each week

RSE Club Report – It’s a racing kind of week!

  • Nia Glover – 42:54 – 2nd SL!
  • Mark Garrett – 43:00
  • Paul Beaumont – 48:46 – 2nd MV70!
  • Jo Wood – 49:41
  • Elaine Chapman – 50:32
  • Martin ‘Ted’ Pitts – 53:51
  • Vicki Mason – 54:47
  • Liz Hulcup – 55:03

Excellent running everyone!

Race for Life Swindon

The Race for Life events are held across the country in aid of Cancer Research UK and are a fantastic way to raise money for the charity. The Swindon event took place this Saturday, attracting hundred of runners and walkers to Lydiard park.

RSE’s Elaine and Ben Chapman took on the 5k course alongside their sons, Daniel and Matthew.

[A] brilliant atmosphere and Daniel and Matthew loved it!

Elaine Chapman

Well done to everyone who ran and raised money for the cause!

Salzburg Marathon

The Salzburg marathon takes place within the city of Mozart’s running festival, with dozens of bands, musicians, refreshments and races for runners to choose from. The route features incredible views of the snow-capped Alpine peaks and the fortress “Hohensalzburg”, as well as a tour of the city and forest passageways on the outskirts.

A huge well done to Phil Southworth, who completed the course fresh from parkrun the day before! It was a new PB for Phil, who completed the course in 3:59:27!

It’s my first sub four hour marathon, so I’m delighted with the result.

Phil Southworth

Superb running, Phil!

Commonweal 5 Mile

Starting at Commonweal School field, Swindon, this 5 mile races follows the Old Town Railway Path for a scenic, countryside course. Runners beware of the climb at the end however – the race website quaintly mentions the route “has a sting in its tail…!” as the last mile is uphill!

Congratulation to Pauline Tilbury, who completed the race after it was postponed for 2 years!

I entered in 2020 and this was the ‘carried over’ event. A really friendly small race with lots of local residents cheering along the way. A nice course, starting in Swindon Old Town with some good views, a run around the lake and a challenging hill near the end. It was quite hot & muggy and as usual I was wearing one too many layers!

Pauline Tilbury

Well done, Pauline!

Shobdon Wood Race

This completely off-road event takes place in Shobdon Wood in North Herefordshire and is an unusual distance of 6.9 miles with 1,000ft of climb. Entrants run along well marked forestry tracks and footpaths, taking in the picturesque woodlands of the Mortimer Trail long distance footpath. The race website mentions that “on a clear day there are great views of the Lugg Valley”, although with the rainy weather on race day, runners may not have been so lucky this time!

RSE’s Carol Sworn completed the course in a brilliant time of 1 hour 11 minutes!

A lovely little race organised by Croft Ambrey Running Club near Leominster. Friends of ours recently moved to the area so I was invited to join them for this race which starts pretty much at the end of their garden. It was a lovely run, with fabulous scenery although a tough uphill last uphill mile was a challenge!

Carol Sworn

Fantastic work, Carol!

Tewkesbury Half Marathon

Thanks to the low elevation and entirely road course, the Tewkesbury Half marathon is a popular race for runners. Entrants follow the road around the scenic town before heading out to the quiet country lanes surrounding Tewkesbury.

Completing his second race of the week was Mark Garrett, who crossed the line in a superb time of 1:45:47!

Well done on a great race week, Mark!

Hullavington Half Marathon

The running events in Hullavington are notoriously ‘not flat’ and the half marathon is no different, testing runners on the undulating roads around the village. As well as the being treated to charming countryside views and a fantastic race atmosphere, the Hullavington events are also well known for the free cake and awesome medals!

Congratulations to RSE’s Elliot Gardiner who achieved a new PB, finishing the course in 1:54:14!

It was very “undulating“! 😅 The free flapjack and the awesome “spinner” medal were a bonus too!

Elliot Gardiner

Congrats, Elliot!

RSE Club Report – An Ultra-Good Day for a Run!

Marlborough Downs 20 mile

The Marlbrough Downs trail races offer beautiful routes through the Wiltshire countryside. Mostly off road, the 20 mile runners are given a challenging course with lots of climb, passing some iconic locations, including The Wansdyke Path, the pre-historic stone circle at Avebury, Cherhill Monument and the White Horse. To add an extra challenge, the course is unmarked, meaning runners need to carry a map and navigate themselves!

Fresh from a recent marathon, RSE’s Sarah Reynolds took on the challenge, finishing in a brilliant time of 3.38.24

It was trail running at its best with stunning scenery and glorious sunshine. I finished in 3.38.24 and loved every minute!

Sarah Reynolds

Excellent running, Sarah!

LDWA Ridgeway 40m

Organised by the Long Distance Walking Association, this 40 mile takes place across Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire. The off road route starts in Avebury Sports and Social Club, before following the ancient ridgeway track to Streatley-on-Thames.

Adding another ultra run to their belts was Lesley Hinsley and Mark Manley, who completed the course in 7 hours and 56 minutes!

Ridgeway 40 mile ultra yesterday, celebrating 60 years Anniversary on LDWA. We ran from Avebury to Goring. Stunning scenery as usual and great company from Mark, who has really helped pushed me along. My longest run to date and 2nd ultra in 2 weeks. 4th so far this year. The check points were amazing, very well stocked with home-baked cakes, by the volunteers. In particular the fruit cake.
Can’t wait for the next one!

Lesley Hinsley

Fantastic running both of you!

Stroud Trails

Starting in Minchinhampton, the Stroud Trail events explore the local trails, famous towpaths, and disused railway tracks around Stroud and promise for some amazing views. As with any running event around the Stroud area, runners are treated to a lot of hills with the event website specifying 20 to 50m elevation gain per km! 3 events are available for runners, including a quarter marathon, half marathon, marathon and ultra marathon.

A huge congratulations to Kevin Joynes-Creed, Cheri Edwards, Jon Collins who completed the ultra marathon course! And to Caroline Joynes-Creed who took on the half marathon option!

Ultra times:

  • Kevin Joynes-Creed – 11:13:43
  • Cheri Edwards – 11:13:44
  • Jon Collins – 11:39:24

Half marathon times:
