RSE Club Report – Stormtroopers, famous cathedrals and the longest day of the year!

Chippenham Longest Day 10k

Starting and finishing in the town centre, this flat course follows the quiet country lanes around Chippenham. Held on the longest day of the year, it was unsurprisingly a hot run, despite starting late in the evening.

Running for RSE was Pauline Tilbury, who finished the course in a brilliant time of 1 hour 7 minutes!

It was still 24 degrees at 19:30 but luckily there were a few shady kms along the course!

Pauline Tilbury

Well done, Pauline!

Gloucester 10k

This predominantly flat course follows roads, footpaths and towpaths in the heart of Gloucester, to give runners a tour of the cathedral, quays, canal and docks. Organised by Tewkesbury RC, the race boasts a community feel and chance for some running tourism!

Well done to Richard Edwards, who completed the course in a new PB time of 58:04, and Jess James, who finished in a brilliant time of 1:00:26!

I ran the Gloucester 10k with my daughter, Jen. My time was 58:04, which is my quickest 10k. The course was flat and the weather was sunny but not hot. I am looking forward to running another 10k soon as my times are improving.

Richard Edwards

Fantastic running both of you!

Torbay Half Marathon

This popular seaside half marathon comprises of a two lap course, starting and finishing on Paignton Green. Runners are treated en route to stunning views of the coast, the historic Torre Abbey and the Princess Gardens.

RSE’s Tim Wainwright takes on the course every year!

I love this half as many at out club know. I didn’t get the miles in prior to the day but still thoroughly enjoyed a great coastal race. After attempting 4 times to beat the famous Torbay stormtrooper, I finally beat him today!

Tim Wainwright

Congratulations to Tim who completed the course in 2 hours and 5 minutes!

Annual AGM

This Tuesday is the club’s annual AGM – this is a chance to have a say in your club and to vote in the committee positions. The committee has emailed club members the agenda for the evening and the proposed changes to the constitution – it’s also available on the club WhatsApp group and Facebook. We recommend having a read before Tuesday!

We hope to see you there!

If you would like a run or race included in the club report, don’t forget to message Ellie Taylor by 5pm Sunday each week 🙂

Bourton Hilly Half Marathon

This one-lap race starts at Greystones Farm in Bourton on the Water before taking runners on a tour of the villages of Clapton and Sherborne. As the name suggests, there are a few inclines along the route… over 850 ft elevation! But with great organisation, picturesque views and the promise of cake at the end, it’s a great event to enter.

We won’t complain about Tinglesfield again!

Sarah Page

A well organised race. An undulating course on a new route – the first hill at mile 2 could easily make or break your race, particularly for those who went too hard on it. The last 5 miles give a good opportunity to come home strong. Well done to all our RSE runners!

Dave Witnall

Checkendon trail 5k

This multi-terrain run features some stunning views along beautiful beech wood tracks. The first half of the race lulls runners into a false sense of security, before a tough final uphill mile. A family friendly event, the Checkendon 5k has a full event village, with food and a bouncy castle for the kids!

A huge well done to Charlie Austin and Edith Putt for completing the event!

Lovely downhill first half, not a lovely uphill second half! I ran with Edith Putt and the event is organised by RSE member Hannah Pivonka. Great little event ☺️

Charlie Austin

Freckleton Half Marathon

Dubbed the oldest half marathon in the UK, the Freckleton Half Marathon took place this weekend in Lancashire. The rural course has often been rated in the top half marathon, despite its undulating route. Runners are taken along a beautiful course which takes in the Fylde Coast.

A huge well done to Katy Miller who completed the course in 2 hours 4 mins.

No PB but a solid effort in the sunshine […] in true RSE spirit, there was a surprise visit from Sarah Reynolds on the start line as she was visiting family in the area.

Katy Miller

RSE Club Report – Canals and Gorges!

Sharpness 50km

Organised by Severn Valley Events Ltd, this 50km ultra marathon takes runners twice along the full length of the Sharpness Canal, which runs from Sharpness to Gloucester. Runners were the treated to live music, beer and food for a festival style event at the finish line.

Completing his 7th ultra marathon of the year (phew!), was Mark Manley, fresh from the God Bless The Queen 7 Hour Challenge only last week!

Mark completed the course in 4 hours 56 minutes and was 5th overall!

Cheddar Gorge Trail Half Marathon

The famous Cheddar Gorge is one of Britain’s most picturesque landmarks and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its gorge cliff top path producing some spectacular views. Sunday 12th June saw Relish Running hosting 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon events along the iconic site, with, according to the website,  “one really good hill along the way”. Half marathon runners follow the course up the Mendip Hills and take on 1000ft of hill climbs!

A huge well done to Elliot Gardiner, who completed the course in an unofficial time of 2.33.25!

A baptism of fire to say the least! 🔥 My first ever trail race consisting of huge 1000ft hill climbs, treacherous rocky descents, boggy marshes, a huge hill climb at the finish and topped off with 20° heat! 🥵 Almost all worth it for the stunning views across the top of the gorge 😅 Definitely the most scenic race I’ve done. As a half PB was never on the cards, I took time out to take photos en route and enjoy the scenery! 😍

RSE Club Report – Running for Beer, the Club and the Queen!

Stroud Beer Race

With the promise of a free beer at the end, running club members headed over to Stroud this week for an alternative workout to the Wednesday club sessions – a hot, very hilly race. The course starts at the Old Lodge on Minchinhampton Common, where runners navigated the cows to park and get warmed up. The route then followed 3 laps down into Amberley, with a very steep climb back towards the pub.

Included this year in the RSE club championship, it was great to see so many members of the club take part! As many had not competed in a 7.2 mile race before, its safe to assume most club members also achieved a PB!

  • David Witnall – 48:42

  • Ben Mutlow – 55:45

Well done, everyone! Brilliant running all round!

Westonbirt Sprint Triathlon

Organised by DB Max, the event’s swim takes place within the grounds of the beautiful Westonbirt Girls School at the Westonbirt Leisure Centre. The 400m swim is in the heated indoor pool. The 24k bike section is a fast, flat course, which passes the world famous Westonbirt Arboretum and the Royal Residence of Highgrove. The final 5k run takes place through the school grounds.

A huge well done to RSE’s Andy Sampson, and Nadine Brown, who completed her first ever triathlon!

  • Andy Sampson – 1:22:57
  • Nadine Brown – 1:41:01

I’ve poor swimming technique and no confidence on a bike but completing a triathlon was on the bucket list.

It wasn’t fast and, 15 hours after Stroud Beer Race probably wasn’t clever but like Eden said to me upon finishing, “I don’t care where you came as long as you enjoyed it and had fun!” Wise words from the 6yr old!

Special thanks to Rob and kids for supporting and Sampo for talking me in to it!

Nadine Brown

God Bless The Queen 7 Hour Challenge

This Jubilee inspired event takes place across a 4.5 mile course which loops up and down the River Thames by the Magna Carta and Queens statue. Entrants are challenged to complete as many laps at they can within the 7 hour window. The race promised a lot of bunting and street party water stations.

Congratulations to RSE’s Mark Manley, who completed 40 miles within 6 hours and 50 minutes! Mark came 1st overall in the event, completing the furthest distance within the 7 hour period!

Fairford 10k

Topping off the long weekend’s racing celebrations was Running Somewhere Else’s very own race, the Fairford 10k. Club members marshalled and cheered, from those on bag drop and entries, to the water stations and timing station – a huge thank you to all those who supported in creating a fantastic event!

This year, the race was part of the Gloucester AAA race series, which meant that entries sold out quickly. The course itself runs from Fairford rugby club before following country lanes out to Quenington and back. The race coincides with the Fairford festival, with a kid’s race, food and bar on offer for a family day out.

  • Paul Beaumont – 47:32
  • Elaine Chapman – 49:02
  • Sarah Page – 52:35
  • Liz Hulcup – 54:10 – 1st LV65!
  • Jessica James – 57:30

  • Linda Edwards – 59:20
  • Anne-Marie Davies – 1:00:18

300k May Challenge

A huge well done to Zoe Markham-Lee who completed a 300k May distance challenge!

It was hard! Basically 10k a day with one rest day. If you miss a day, the miles mount up… My legs are still solid!

Zoe Markham-Lee

For those of you who work better in miles, that’s 180 miles for the month! Brilliant work, Zoe – time for a well earnt rest!
