A marathon to celebrate

The Abingdon  Marathon

The Abingdon marathon is one of the oldest marathons in the UK.  This year was it’s 40th “edition”. The course is flat and fast, almost all on roads, and is a great race to go for a personal best time.  It is  now one of only seven UK qualifying races for the Abbott World Marathon Majors Marathon Tours & Travel Age Group World Rankings.  The route passes through the town centre, heading out on a two-lap course, passing through the picturesque villages of Drayton, Milton and Sutton Courtenay. Runners then head back through Abingdon to Tilsley Park, finishing on the track in front of the grandstand.   This year nearly 1000 people entered it

Zoe Markham-Lee ran the course in a fantastic time of 04:26:28 achieving  a PB

I ran the marathon with my friend Jon, but with 8 miles left to go, he told me to crack on as I wanted a PB. I found it hard to judge the timings and ended up doing my fastest 5k at the end. I’m glad I only had half a bottle of red the night before! Weather wasn’t lovely, but I couldn’t control that! I think you can see how scared I was at the start in the photo!

Leonardslee gardens heritage trail

In 2019, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens in Horsham, West Sussex, opened its doors after a closure of nine years.  This magnificent Grade I listed garden was nearly lost forever and has been the subject of the largest garden restoration in England and possibly Europe.  RSE’ s Sylvia Warman was there and ran the course.  Looks like a  place well worth going to!

Race Time: 01:24:10

A great route through the stunning gardens. Weather was continuous heavy rain but it was great fun. The first formal trail event I’ve done. Enjoyed running on a more forgiving surface

A challenge with water laden tracks and steep hill at the finish of both laps. Lots of laughs with Donna and Kathryn accompanied by swearing from me.
